The pics above compare three brass .38 Short Colt cartridges to three nickel (silver finish) .38 Special cartridges. Plus another picture comparing three .38 Short Colt cartridges on the left, to three hard cast 9mm cartridges on the right. These should give the shooter a good comparison.

The .38 Short Colt is basically the grandfather of .38 Special. It is essentially .38 Special brass cut to 9mm length. It works in any .38 Special/.357 Magnum revolver that is safe to fire. The short cartridge length allows for efficient use of smaller powder charges, resulting in light recoil for the shooter. The short case also results in much faster ejection.

.357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridge cases tend to get hung up on the ejector rods of most revolvers as they are shorter than the .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridge case. The .38 Short Colt does not have that issue, even when shooting in a J Frame snubby revolver. In fact, many competition shooters use .38 Short Colt cases for that exact reason.
